Summary

Now in paperback, the first book--an instant bestseller--in the sumptuous, sultry, and romantic YA vampire series from New York Times bestselling author Renee Ahdieh。

In 1872, New Orleans is a city ruled by the dead。 But to seventeen-year-old Celine Rousseau, New Orleans is a safe haven after she's forced to flee her life as a dressmaker in Paris。 Taken in by the sisters of the Ursuline convent, Celine is quickly enraptured by the vibrant city becoming embroiled in the glitzy underworld, known as La Cour des Lions, after catching the eye of the group's enigmatic leader, Sbastien Saint Germain。

When the body of one of the girls from the convent is found in Sbastien's own lair--the second dead girl to turn up in recent weeks--Celine must battle her attraction to Sbastien and suspicions about his guilt along with the shame of her own horrible secret。

I really had difficulties finding into the story。 I didn't like the different point of views, mainly Celine and "the big bad" whose identity remains hidden until the end。 Celine is not my favourite main character although I cannot really say why。 I thought I would love the New Orleans Setting, but I always had the impression, that it was just a mixture between an Anne-Rice-Novel and something inspired by the Originals。 I did love the thoughts about fashion and style and the costumes though, also I really had difficulties finding into the story。 I didn't like the different point of views, mainly Celine and "the big bad" whose identity remains hidden until the end。 Celine is not my favourite main character although I cannot really say why。 I thought I would love the New Orleans Setting, but I always had the impression, that it was just a mixture between an Anne-Rice-Novel and something inspired by the Originals。 I did love the thoughts about fashion and style and the costumes though, also the descriptions about the food。 It wasn't until the last few pages that I really felt for the story and the ending was great - so my hopes are up for part two, let's see where this will lead。 。。。more

He is supposed to be the dark prince, lucifer, lord of the lions, this dark and dangerous being。 And yet。。。 other than that first , hopeful interaction with him, that was。。。it。 He was literally just。。。there , with a few remarks。 And then suddenly he is all about her??? I am so confused。 I needed more to go off of, actual detail, not mindnumbing details about damn meadows or whatever。 I did not really even get the chance to know Basien, except for 'sometimes he lies, sometimes he tells the truth, ooh he hot'。 Yeah。。。 Honestly the only thing that kept me going was the mysterious pov。 I loved how it broke the fourth wall。 i loved how it was the villain。 I loved the narrative, and the monster we did not know。 It was thrilling to hear them talk about their perspective on things。 And yet。。。even they let me down。 This whole book was rather。。。not as I expected。 So yeah, overall, wayy to much needless descriptions that do not progress the plot, characters that were bogged down by said descriptions, and a few 'action' scenes that were overall meh。 Remember, this is all my opinion。 You want your own, read the book。 Till nexttime。 。。。more

Couldn’t make it through this。 Poor character development and the chemistry just wasn’t there between the characters。

I read this right after finishing Sarah J Maas’ first Crescent City novel and expected to not enjoy it, but after a little bit of a slow start I really got into this story。 I am a huge fan of Anne Rice’s novels, and this is not that, but it does pay homage to stories of New Orleans, which I love。 Excited for the next one!

I was a bit disappointed with this book。 I really enjoyed some of her other books (the flame in the mist duology), but this one did not do it for me。 The setting and atmosphere of New Orleans was lovely, but I wasn’t quite sure how it fit into the “historical” shoes it was trying to fill。 There are also a few too many Shakespeare references in here for me。 I like Shakespeare just as much as the next person, but a reference every chapter (it felt like) seems a bit too much。 I also grew tired of h I was a bit disappointed with this book。 I really enjoyed some of her other books (the flame in the mist duology), but this one did not do it for me。 The setting and atmosphere of New Orleans was lovely, but I wasn’t quite sure how it fit into the “historical” shoes it was trying to fill。 There are also a few too many Shakespeare references in here for me。 I like Shakespeare just as much as the next person, but a reference every chapter (it felt like) seems a bit too much。 I also grew tired of how often it was mentioned that Sebastian was hot。 The book really wouldn’t let me forget how gorgeous he was。 I appreciated the vampire element and I adored Odette’s character, but I definitely won’t be reading the next book (especially since it seems a love triangle is being set up)。 。。。more

After mixed warnings from my friends, I definitely understand why this book is a hit or miss now。I love the murder mystery aspect of the book but despite the premise being promoted as a “vampire” book, I did not get the amount of vampires that I expect to drown myself with and that’s quite disappointing。The plot was okay。 There are some parts that were draggy, especially in the middle。 I also tend to get confused on what’s happening in some parts because so much were happening, a mess even, but After mixed warnings from my friends, I definitely understand why this book is a hit or miss now。I love the murder mystery aspect of the book but despite the premise being promoted as a “vampire” book, I did not get the amount of vampires that I expect to drown myself with and that’s quite disappointing。The plot was okay。 There are some parts that were draggy, especially in the middle。 I also tend to get confused on what’s happening in some parts because so much were happening, a mess even, but then the plot picks up again。 I feel like there were a lot of Celine’s parts that was unnecessary and could’ve not been included to make the story flow much more smoothly, but the “mysterious” chapter in between, I very much like that。This is my first ever Renée Ahdieh book and I’m already quite disappointed。 Perhaps I’ll give her book another chance, we’ll see。 I’m contemplating whether or not continuing the sequel would be worth it but we’ll see if I’ll pick it up or not soon oop。 I’ve seen a lot of praises around Renée Ahdieh’s books but perhaps her writing’s not for me (?) though it’s too early to say still after reading only one of her books。Would I recommend this?
